The
unique sound of New Orleans Hula is mainly due to the unusual instrumentation
- the all-brass front line of Norman and Tom, sharing the melody and harmonising
equally, is complimented by the full, rhythmic feel of the guitar, banjo and
bass in the rhythm section creating an overall authentic, vintage sound.
The style of music we play is not easy to describe and doesn't fit neatly into
a specific category of jazz; each tune is significantly governed by which instrument
Sam is playing at the time - when he plays the slide guitar it adds either an
Hawaiian flavour or a bluesy sound and similarly when he plays the mandolin
or 5-string banjo it gives it a country/folky feel.
